What is a cookie croissant?
The viral TikTok sensation featuring the cookie dough croissant isn't a creation from the platform itself. This innovative recipe actually hails from Maison Louvard, a quaint French bakery nestled in Paris. The bakery introduced its newest offering with the description "Croissant pur beurre garnit d’une généreuse pâte à cookie mi-cuite." Which translates to a buttery croissant with chocolate chip cookie dough inside and on top.
And after a lot of hesitation, I decided to give these a go, and this viral cookie croissant is one thing that won't disappoint.
Ingredients
- Croissants: The main pastry component of the cookie croissant, providing the flaky, buttery layers that are characteristic of croissants.
- Unsalted Butter: Provides richness, flavor, and moisture to the cookie dough. It also helps create a tender texture in the baked cookie.
- Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the cookie and helps to create a crisp exterior while contributing to browning during baking.
- Brown Sugar: Adds moisture, a hint of caramel flavor, and chewiness to the cookie. It also aids in creating a softer texture compared to granulated sugar.
- Plain Flour: Serves as the main structure of the cookie, providing gluten for the dough to hold together. It also gives the cookie its structure and chewiness.
- Cornstarch: Often used in cookie recipes to create a softer texture by inhibiting gluten formation. It also helps to thicken the dough and promotes a more tender crumb.
- Baking Soda: Acts as a leavening agent, causing the cookie to rise and spread during baking. It also reacts with acidic ingredients (such as brown sugar) to produce carbon dioxide, which helps create a softer texture.
- Egg: Adds moisture, richness, and structure to the cookie dough. It helps bind the ingredients together and contributes to the cookie's chewiness and tenderness.
- Dark Chocolate: Adds depth of flavor, richness, and texture to the cookie. It melts during baking, creating pockets of gooey chocolate throughout the cookie and providing bursts of intense chocolate flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any variations I can try with this recipe?
Yes! Feel free to experiment with different types of cookie dough flavors to suit your taste preferences. You can also add additional ingredients like chocolate chips, nuts, or caramel for extra indulgence.
Can I prepare cookie croissants ahead of time?
Yes, you can! Once assembled, you can freeze the unbaked cookie croissants on a baking sheet until firm, then transfer them to a freezer bag for storage. When ready to bake, simply place them on a baking sheet and bake according to the recipe instructions, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time if needed.
How should I store leftover cookie croissants?
If you have any leftovers (though they're usually devoured quickly!), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. You can also freeze them for longer storage, ensuring they're tightly wrapped to prevent freezer burn.
Can I reheat cookie croissants?
Absolutely! To reheat leftover cookie croissants, simply place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes, or until warmed through. You can also microwave them for a quick warm-up, but be sure to watch them closely to avoid overcooking.
What's the best way to serve cookie croissants?
Cookie croissants are delicious on their own, but they also pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea. For an extra special treat, you can dust them with powdered sugar or even open them up and fill them with ice cream for a crookie sandwich!
