The bread has a crispy exterior and a soft, center, giving you the best of both worlds in texture and flavor. It’s a fun and easy way to enjoy coffee buns without having to make them from scratch!

Where is Coffee Bun Toast From?

Coffee bun toast has its roots in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. It was inspired by the famous “Rotiboy” or “Kopi Roti,” a popular coffee bun that became a household name in the late 1990s. Its irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread and coffee made it a beloved treat in bakeries across the region.

How to Make It

To make coffee bun toast, you’ll need white bread, unsalted butter, espresso powder, and a few other simple ingredients. The process involves layering the bread with a buttery coffee mixture, baking it to golden perfection, and enjoying it warm. It’s a quick and easy recipe perfect for beginners looking to try something new.

Ingredients

Let’s break down the ingredients needed for your delicious coffee bun toast. Each component plays a key role in achieving the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Here’s what each ingredient does:

  • Unsalted Butter: Butter is the base of the paste, providing richness and creaminess. It also helps create the crisp, cookie-like topping as it melts and browns in the oven.
  • Granulated Sugar: Sugar adds sweetness to balance the bitterness of the coffee and helps caramelize the topping, creating a crispy texture when baked.

  • Egg: The egg binds the ingredients together and gives structure to the paste. It also helps the topping puff up slightly and brown during baking.
  • All-purpose Flour: Flour provides body and structure to the coffee topping, helping it form the crispy layer on the toast. It works together with the butter, egg, and sugar to create the cookie-like crust.

  • Instant Coffee Powder: The coffee powder is the star ingredient for flavor, giving the topping a deep, rich coffee taste. Instant coffee dissolves easily and blends well with the other ingredients, infusing the entire paste with coffee flavor.
  • Hot Water: Hot water is used to dissolve the instant coffee powder so it mixes smoothly into the paste without any graininess. It helps distribute the coffee flavor evenly throughout the mixture.

  • White Bread: The bread is the base of the toast. Its soft texture contrasts with the crispy coffee-flavored topping, giving the dish the signature texture combination of a coffee bun on toast. White bread works well because it has a neutral flavor that allows the topping to shine.

Tips for Making the Best Coffee Bun Toast

Soften the Butter: Ensure your butter is at room temperature before mixing. Soft butter helps the ingredients blend smoothly, making it easier to spread the paste evenly on the bread.

Dissolve Coffee Thoroughly: Make sure the coffee granules are fully dissolved in hot water before adding them to the paste. This avoids any gritty texture and enhances the rich coffee flavor.

Even Spreading is Key: Spread the coffee mixture evenly on the bread, making sure not to pile it too thick. A thin layer will create a crisp, cookie-like topping that contrasts perfectly with the soft bread underneath.

Use a Wire Rack: Placing the toast on a wire rack instead of a baking tray allows the heat to circulate evenly. This ensures that both the bread and the coffee topping bake uniformly without becoming soggy.

Watch the Baking Time: Keep an eye on the toast as it bakes. You want the coffee topping to turn golden brown and slightly crispy, without burning the edges. 8-10 minutes is usually perfect, but ovens vary, so check around the 8-minute mark.

Experiment with Bread Types: While white bread works wonderfully, don’t be afraid to try other varieties like brioche or milk bread for a richer, softer base that adds an extra layer of indulgence.

Serving Suggestions and Storage

Best Time to Serve

Serve your coffee bun toast warm and fresh from the oven for the ultimate flavor experience. Pair it with a hot cup of coffee or tea to enhance the rich, roasted coffee flavor of the toast.

This makes for a delightful sweet breakfast pastry or an afternoon snack that will satisfy your sweet tooth. The crispy coffee topping and soft bread are perfect when enjoyed together, just as you would find in your favorite Asian bakery treats.

Storing Leftovers

If you have leftovers (which is rare because this treat is so irresistible!), you can store your coffee bun toast uncovered at room temperature for up to one day.

For longer storage, place the toast in an airtight container and freeze it. When you’re ready to enjoy it again, simply reheat it in the oven to restore its crispiness. This method will ensure that your  bread maintains its texture and deliciousness, even after a few days.

Variations

Versions

For a sweet twist, add a filling like cream cheese or chocolate to your bread before adding the topping. The creamy or chocolatey center will melt into the soft bread, making each bite even more indulgent.

Customizing Coffee Flavor

If you’re a coffee lover, you can easily adjust the intensity of the coffee flavor in your coffee-infused dough.

For a bolder, more robust coffee taste, increase the amount of espresso powder in the topping mixture. If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of espresso or use instant coffee. This flexibility allows you to tailor the recipe to your personal preferences and enjoy a coffee-flavored dessert that’s just right for you!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using Too Much Topping

While the crispy coffee topping is a highlight of this recipe, using too much can lead to overspreading during baking. This will result in a messier presentation and might overwhelm the delicate flavors of the bread. Be mindful to spread just the right amount of topping so it crisps up perfectly without dripping off the sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant coffee substitutes?

Yes, you can use espresso powder or finely ground coffee as a substitute, but make sure to dissolve it fully in hot water. If using espresso powder, adjust the quantity to taste, as it tends to be stronger.

Can I use salted butter instead of unsalted butter?

Yes, you can use salted butter if that’s what you have on hand, but reduce or omit any additional salt in the recipe to avoid an overly salty taste.

What type of bread works best for coffee bun toast?

Milk bread is typically used for its soft texture, but feel free to experiment with brioche, or even whole wheat bread for a heartier option. Just make sure the bread isn’t too thick, as it may affect how evenly the topping bakes.

Can I make the paste ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the coffee paste ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day. Let it come to room temperature before spreading it on the bread for easy application.

Can I make this recipe without an oven?

Yes, you can try using a toaster oven or air fryer to achieve similar results. Set the temperature to 180°C (350°F) and check for doneness around the 6-8 minute mark, as smaller appliances tend to cook faster.

Is there a way to make this recipe dairy-free?

Yes! You can substitute the unsalted butter with a plant-based butter alternative, and it should still yield a similar texture and flavor. Make sure to choose a butter substitute with a neutral taste to keep the coffee flavor prominent.

Can I adjust the sweetness?

If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the amount of granulated sugar to your liking. Keep in mind that this may slightly affect the texture of the topping, but it will still turn out delicious.

Why is my topping not crispy?

If your topping isn’t as crispy as you’d like, try spreading the paste thinner on the bread. Also, check your oven temperature to ensure it’s at 180°C (350°F), and give the toast a couple more minutes in the oven until it crisps up.

Can I add other flavors to the paste?

Absolutely! You can add a hint of vanilla extract, a pinch of cinnamon, or even cocoa powder to the coffee paste for a twist on the classic coffee bun flavor.
