Dog Birthday Cake

A dog-friendly cake made with banana, carrots, and peanut butter. Is there a better way to celebrate your furry friend’s birthday?!

Recently my puppy turned 1! My puppy is a dachshund called Bean and the most adorable pup in the universe. I’m sure most dog owners feel the same way about their own dogs…

To celebrate her birthday we wanted to make her day special so we took her to our nearest doggy beach and I baked her very first birthday cake. As the dedicated birthday cake baker of the family, it was only right to bake Bean a birthday cake too.

This cake is made from dog-friendly ingredients that are nutritious and delicious! I’ve used a combination of banana, carrot, peanut butter, egg, and oats to create this cute little cake, but feel free to substitute the fruits and veg with your dog’s favorite.

Bean absolutely loved this cake and I’m sure your furry friend will too!

How to make a cake dog friendly

When it comes to making cakes for dogs it’s important that you take extra care when selecting your ingredients. There are a lot of ingredients that we can’t give dogs so we need to be extra careful.

I’ve done careful research on what kind of ingredients are dog-friendly and developed this recipe with all their favorites!

When selecting your ingredients it’s important to choose them in their most natural and whole form. For example, while dogs can have all-purpose flour it can upset their stomachs in larger amounts. Try to use wholegrain flours or flours like oat flour, almond meal, or coconut flour.

I’ve used oat flour, aka ground oats, in this recipe but feel free to replace it with any other wholegrain dog-friendly flour!

Ingredients in a dog-friendly cake

The ingredients in this cake are quite forgiving and easily swapped out for your dog’s favorite flavors. Mix and match to create your dogs ideal cake!

Whole oats

I use ground whole oats in this recipe. The flour binds all the ingredients together to form the structure of the cake. If you don’t have oats you can replace them with whole wheat flour, whole grain flour, rice flour, coconut flour, or almond meal.

Baking powder

Baking powder is safe for your dog! Baking powder gives the cake lift and lightness. This gives the baked cake that cake-like consistency!

Carrot

Grated carrot gives the cake moisture and flavor, while also making up a large bulk of the cake’s structure.

Mashed Banana

The mashed banana adds natural sweetness to the cake without using other sweeteners like honey or maple syrup that are typically used in dog cakes.

I like to use bananas, as a large amount of sweetener can upset your dog’s stomach.

You can also replace it with applesauce or pumpkin puree if you desire!

Natural Peanut butter

Peanut butter is loved by all dogs! This gives the cake a delicious flavor that your dogs will love. Make sure you use 100% natural peanut butter, preferably unsalted.

Some peanut butter will have xylitol, a sweetener. Make sure you check the ingredients of your peanut butter as xylitol is toxic to dogs.

Large egg

The egg acts as a binder for the cake. If you prefer to leave the egg out you can add 1/4 cup apple sauce instead.

Ingredients in the yogurt frosting

Plain greek yogurt

Yogurt is the perfect dog-friendly frosting alternative! I like to use greek yogurt as it is thicker in consistency, making it a great frosting substitute.

Make sure the yogurt is plain as sweetened yogurts may contain artificial sweeteners that are toxic to your dog. Sugar is also not good for your pup so plain yogurt is the best choice!

Natural Peanut butter

Peanut butter adds flavor to the frosting as well as thickness, helping it become a spreadable consistency.

Like I mentioned earlier, make sure the peanut butter is made from 100% peanuts, preferably with no added salt.

Cornstarch

Peanut butter on its own isn’t quite enough to thicken the yogurt to a frosting consistency. A little cornstarch brings it to the perfect consistency to spread all over the cake.

Optional – My Favourite Extras That Add a Little Magic

A tablespoon of pumpkin puree

For an extra layer of dog-safe flavour and moisture.

A dash of cinnamon

I use this at TuCha for warmth; dogs tolerate it in very small amounts.

Biscuits

Dog-friendly “sprinkle” biscuits or cut-out treats for decorating the top – fun for the birthday feel.

Substitutions – Smart Ingredient Swaps That Still Taste Amazing

  • If you don’t have oat flour, use whole wheat flour or almond meal – texture will change slightly but it works.
  • Swap banana for applesauce or pumpkin puree if your dog prefers those flavours or is sensitive to banana.
  • Instead of peanut butter you can use almond butter (just ensure no xylitol or extra sweetener) for a nutty twist.

Decorating your cake

Piping the frosting

When it comes to decorating your cake, go with how you feel! I used a piping bag to pipe a pattern of the yogurt frosting over the top of the cake, but if you don’t have a piping bag feel free to simply swirl the frosting all over the top.

Toppings

There are so many different topping options! You can go all out and source some dog-friendly sprinkles, or decorate the cake with your dog’s favorite biscuits. I didn’t have either so I cut out some love hearts from a carrot using a small cookie cutter.

Get creative! The options are endless as long as they are dog friendly!

Tips – My Personal Tricks for a Professional-Looking Result

Think Like a Baker, Not Just a Pet Parent

Measure accurately. Oats soak liquid fast, so if the batter feels stiff, loosen with a splash of milk. That small adjustment changes everything.

Use Texture as a Signal

Your batter should feel like banana bread, not pancake mix. A thick, scoopable texture means your cake will rise evenly.

Watch the Bake, Don’t Just Time It

Every oven behaves differently. Trust the look — golden top and springy touch — more than the timer.

Chill Your Frosting Before Piping

Ten minutes in the fridge transforms runny yogurt frosting into perfect, smooth swirls.

Mix by Hand for Better Control

Hand mixing prevents over-working and keeps the crumb gentle, ideal for dogs’ digestion.

Keep Decorations Simple and Safe

Carrot shavings or crushed biscuits add charm without risking unsafe toppings.

Variations – Fun Twists and Flavours

Pumpkin Spice Celebration Cake

Replace half the banana with pumpkin puree and add a trace of cinnamon for a soft, autumn-style aroma.

Coconut and Carrot Dream

Mix in a spoon of shredded coconut and a drizzle of coconut oil. It bakes into a rich, fragrant crumb that smells like a warm kitchen.

Blueberry Burst Pupcakes

Fold in mashed blueberries and bake as mini cupcakes. The berries give a gentle pop of sweetness and colour.

Sweet Potato Layer Cake

Use grated sweet potato instead of carrot and layer with thin yogurt spreads for colour contrast.

Banana-Free Apple Oat Treat

Substitute smooth applesauce for banana. It’s light, aromatic, and works for dogs that dislike banana.

Frozen Summer Version

Freeze the batter in silicone moulds and serve chilled. I tried this one summer at TuCha and it became a surprise hit.

Serving Suggestions – How I Like to Present These for Maximum Wow

Classic Café Presentation

Serve on a neutral plate with carrot ribbons around the base. It looks refined but effortless.

Two-Layer Party Cake

Stack two small cakes with frosting between layers for a simple but dramatic celebration look.

Mini Pupcake Bar

Pipe yogurt frosting on several mini cakes and arrange on a long tray for group celebrations.

Chic Take-Home Favors

Cut leftovers into cubes, wrap in parchment, and tie with twine. Perfect for guests at a dog party.

Pairing with Puppy Drinks

Offer alongside a bowl of chilled lactose-free milk or thinned yogurt. It rounds out the celebration.

Elegant Simplicity for Photos

Shoot near natural light, keep the backdrop plain, and let the colours shine. The golden crumb and pale frosting photograph beautifully.

Common Mistakes to Avoid – Lessons I’ve Learned After Dozens of Batches

Using the Wrong Peanut Butter

Only plain, unsalted peanut butter works. Anything with xylitol or added sugar can harm dogs.

Overmixing the Batter

Stop as soon as the ingredients combine. Overmixing tightens texture and makes the cake chewy.

Baking in the Wrong Pan Size

Deep pans slow baking and dry the edges. Use a six-inch round or four cupcakes for best results.

Frosting While Warm

Warm cake melts yogurt frosting. Always cool completely before spreading.

Forgetting About Portion Size

Small dogs need small slices. Store extra in the fridge and serve gradually.

Ignoring Ingredient Freshness

Fresh oats and active baking powder keep the cake fluffy and light.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does this last?

This cake will last up to 4 days when stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

How much can I give my dog at once?

I wouldn’t give the whole cake to your dog as it is probably way too much unless you have a big dog!

The cake itself is quite small but I recommend cutting it into quarters and feeding it to your dog over the course of a couple of days. Or of course, you can share it with your other doggy friends!!

Can I make these into cupcakes?

Yes! You can divide the batter between 4 cupcake patties, or triple the recipe to make a dozen pupcakes!

If you are baking them as cupcakes instead of cake pans they won’t need the full 25 minutes to bake. Check on them at 15 minutes, and then at 5-minute intervals afterward. They are ready when an inserted toothpick emerges clean.

Can I use dairy-free yogurt for the frosting?

Yes, plain coconut yogurt works well. It’s creamy, thick, and safe for dogs that can’t have dairy.

Can I make the cake ahead of time?

Bake it a day in advance, store unfrosted in an airtight container, and frost before serving. It keeps its moisture beautifully.

What flour is best for sensitive dogs?

Almond meal or coconut flour are my go-to options. They bake soft and are gentle on sensitive stomachs.

How do I freeze leftovers properly?

Wrap each slice in parchment and freeze in an airtight box. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving. Wrap each slice in parchment and freeze in an airtight box. Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.

How long can the frosting sit out?

Frosted cake can stay at room temperature for about twenty minutes. Refrigerate if serving later.

Can I decorate with fruit?

Use only dog-safe fruits like blueberries, strawberries, or apples. Avoid grapes or raisins completely.

What if my cake sinks in the middle?

That’s usually an oven or mixing issue. Next time, bake two minutes longer and fold the batter gently.

Is this recipe suitable for senior dogs?

Yes, but reduce the peanut butter slightly and offer smaller portions. Always consider dietary needs.

  1. Catherine,
My dear! Your recipes are fabulous! I’ve watched and re-watched all of the Zumbo’s Just Desserts #2 so many times trying to learn your baking techniques. I’m catching on! ???? Thank you so much!!

    1. Loved this recipe! About to make it again for our Dachshunds, Waylon and Mucca and their Weimaraner brother, Norman. They devoured it! Thank you!

  2. I just made this cake today for my baby boy is going to be 2 years tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe it was awesome ????????????????????

  3. Made this today with zucchini instead of carrot (pup doesn’t like carrots) and apple sauce instead of egg.
He absolutely loved the frosting and was happy to lick every spoon offered. I decorated with pup safe fruits. It was so cute. Can’t wait to share with his friends.

  4. Our two Italian Greyhound boys have the same birthday. One turned 3 today, the other 5. One boy is a very fussy eater and the other is a guts. Both are smiling after enjoying this recipe. Success, thank you! I also note that I researched all ingredients and you are ahead of me. You have really put thought into what dogs can and can’t have.

  5. I used this recipe as a guide because this is the first time I’ve made a dog cake. I used zucchini instead of carrot, and used a little less Greek yogurt in the icing. I was praying he would enjoy because he’s such a picky eater, but, he loved it. I also made the cake into muffins which worked out perfectly, the neighbors dogs also enjoyed it as the cupcakes were a little too much for my dog to eat. Anyhow I would highly recommend this recipe as it includes ingredients that every household has on hand, and is very beginner friendly. =)

  6. Hi Catherine,
I normally buy a cake for my baby girl. The cakes I buy has no taste, not good & it’s quite hard. On top of that, it’s expensive!!! I said to myself, I’ll bake her a cake w/ all natural ingredients and ingredients I have at home. Yesterday, 07/01/24 was my princess Quinn’s 8th birthday. She’s a Shorkie (Shit Zhu mix Yorkie). The cake came out moist & delicious. There’s a bonus to this and hoomans can eat it! At first, Quinn smelled the cake and looked away (1st x having Greek Yogurt w/pb frosting). Then I took off most of the frosting, Quinn ate & liked it!! I didn’t add the cornstarch. The pb was thick enough and made the frosting creamy. Please make some dog treats/snackies for Bean and share it with us. I wanted to share some photos, but unable to. Let me know where I can share it. Thank you for this delicious recipe @catherine.desserts

  7. I doubled the recipe and used two 6 inch cake pans. I made this for my Romeo before he gets put to sleep. His last cake…
